Sexy Times – To Be Erotic or Not?
How much erotica do people want in a book? Is it really necessary to have hands groping body parts, and sex scenes that cover pages and pages and pages? I don’t know about you, but if the sex is hitting the third page, I’m flipping until the dialogue and action starts again.
The point of today’s discussion surrounds the type of books I want to write. I want my stories to be low-angst, escapism that are enjoyable, emotional, and fun. I want to write romance of many kinds; paranormal, sci-fi, and comedy, and contemporary. And what I most want to write is MM romance.
I can hear my friends and family saying, “Wait. What now?”
This is what I want to write. I love the dynamic of MM versus MF. I love my men to be strong, to have fun, to grow, and learn. Most importantly, I want to create worlds where love is love, and that it comes in all shapes, sizes, colors, and numbers. It comes with vampires and wolves, and aliens. It comes with blue skin and extra arms and wings. It happens on Earth and in places far, far, away. There are no boundaries when it comes to romance.
IT’S ALL LOVE
Now we come to my dilemma. How will my mother (and aunt) respond to reading my books filled with gay sex? Yikes. Talk about awkward. I had a chat with my mom and she was super cool and open to it. But….I couldn’t do it. It felt way to awkward. The end result is that my books will be MM, but most of the action will be “off camera” and the only G-rated sexy times will happen because they are necessary to the plot. After all, people expect a fated mate connection to involve sex and a bite.
Therefore, my stories will be filled with romance, mostly of the MM variety (though I’ll toss in a little MF just to shake things up), well developed characters and plot, fun dialogue, and very little in the way of big sexy scenes with hands grabbing any available body part…though there will be some. 🙂
My question for today. How much sex do you want? Do you enjoy the plot more if there is a lot of explicit sexy times? Or does that take away from your enjoyment of the story?
